I’ve got a bit of a different project for you today. This Walker bag pattern came into being because of a sweet sweet dear friend of mine.
God Bless her, but she isn’t one to sit still for very long!
When she made the courageous decision to have back surgery, I knew I had to make something special for her.
I whipped this up one night to help her carry her things and various notebooks from room to room as she worked towards recovery.
It has proved to be so useful for her that I’m sharing it with you too.
I found a few other options out on the internet for walker and wheelchair bags, but honestly, most of them were way more complicated than they needed to be, in my opinion.
So I kept it simple.
All my walker bag needs to do is give easy access to the things we normally carry in our hands or our pockets.
Plus maybe a little more room for the occasional stray remote or water bottle.
I also made it sturdy and quilted so the fabric wouldn’t be flimsy or wrinkly.

One last photo peek… Look at that cute flamingo fabric! š
Pay It Forward
I would like to urge you to always pay it forward if you can. If you have a friend who just had surgery or if you have a friend or relative in a nursing home, make a few and share the love!
Tell me what you think! Leave a comment below. Is this something you plan to make in the near future?
I’d love to see it. You can tag me on Instagram @iseestarsquiltling
Happy Sewing!
Thank you for sharing this. I make walker bags for Walter Reed Medical Center and any who need it. This would be a great pattern to try as it is bigger than the ones I already make.
So glad you can use it! It’s really fun to use up scraps and brought colored fabrics!
Thanks so much for the pattern. It looks almost like the large ones I now make for the re-hab center I had to go into. I also make a smaller version, with the interior bag and two outside pockets, mostly for those with smaller things to carry around, like their cell phones. Using up a lot of my stash of fabric. The center seems to appreciate my donation and the last time I was there I met woman who told me that my small bag replaced her purse. I asked that they give her another one from the last batch. Get your quilt or sewing club to make some bags for your next donation project. They are so appreciated. Krin Daum
Yes! These bags always receive such great feedback from those who use them!
I work in a Retirement Community (Independent, Assisted and Memory Care residents) and I plan on making several of these for my residents!! Thank You for sharing!!
Yay! That’s wonderful! I’ve made several extra myself… fair warning… plan to make several extra because these are a hot item! š
Thanks so much for the pattern. I plan on making some for 2 of my sister’s that need walkers to get around.. It will be very handy for them.
Thank you for making them. I’m happy to supply the pattern! Make a few extra to donate if you have the time… there are lots of people who will want one once they see your sisters!
I love the bag pattern and canāt wait to make it for my mother. She broke her hip in early June and wants to move back to her own house. The bag will help her to carry food, plates and dishes (among other things!) and be independent! Thank you!
Marian
Marian, Speedy recovery wishes for your mom. I’m sure she will love the walker bag that you make her! š
Hoping to make this for my mom’s walker.
I need to make some for my granddaughter. Her friendās birthday party is Saturday. Instead of toys she wants people to bring stuff for residents of a nursing home. How wonderful is that.
How sweet is that?! I know what I want to do for my next birthday party! š Please tell her Happy Birthday for me!
Could you modify this for a wheelchair?
I have a pattern for a wheelchair bag in the works as well. I haven’t quite perfected everything yet. You could move the ties to the outer corners and I think it would work fine? The one I am working on has an outer flap that goes over, like a messenger bag but it still has its issues. I may have to scrap it and go with something a little more open like the walker bag pattern. let me know if you try to modify it on your own. I would love to see the results!
Thank you so much for sharing this pattern. I will be having a total right hip replacement in a couplel of weeks. I am going to make one for my wheelchair as I have to be on one for a total of six weeks. Thank you again. Donna Smith
You’re so welcome! Hope you have a speedy and easy recovery <3
