  • Top 10 Things To Add To Your Crafty Girl Wish List

Perhaps you’ve been in the crafting/sewing industry for a while and you’re looking for some new gadgets to spruce up your creativity… or perhaps you’re just starting out in the sewing/crafting world and you’re in need of some “must-have” items… either way, you’re going to LOVE what I have to share with you today!

I’ve gathered the top 10 things that should be on your crafty girl wish list! – I absolutely LOVE everything on this list – and even added a few remarks on what I’ve got my eyes on to add to my space in the not so distant future!

If you’ve ever sat there like a deer in the headlights when someone asks what you want for your birthday or Christmas etc….. You know how it feels to try to process everything at once, right?

How to say: I would like my own craft store & fabric store, pretty please. Everything in it – all to myself and an extra house to store it all

(By the way, if you can figure out a way to make my dreams come true, I am all ears.)

In an effort to give you the best of the best, I put together a list of the products and tools that I most often find myself giving rave reviews for.

These products have been put to the test in my sewing room and by friends of mine as well… I hope this gives you some really great ideas to add to your wish list!

Note: I also created a video, if you prefer to watch. πŸ‘

10 Things To Add To Your Crafty Girl Wish List!

Top 10 things you should have your crafty girl wish list are absolute must haves for the quilter/sewist! Make sure you don't miss anything!

    1. LIGHTING!

This is the light that I have loved and used for many years. It has LED lighting but the light is adjustable so you can choose the color and brightness that is most comfortable for you when you’re working.

I don’t know about you, but if I’m doing a late-night sewing session… 110% bright florescent lighting is not my first choice! This light allows you to adjust to a warmer light color or a softer brightness so whatever you’re comfort level is… you can find the lighting to match it!

On the subject of lighting… I am probably one of the last hold outs for buying extra sewing machine lighting. I really can’t tell you why I still haven’t made the jump… other than, there have been other things that seem to take more of a priority when the time comes. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ And this little project gets put on the backburner for another day over and over and over again…

I’ve read many blogs and reviews and I think I have it narrowed down to this model that I will be adding to my Christmas list this year!

This model has outstanding reviews and is really affordable. The length looks perfect for my machine as well!

Look for a review post when I finally get this project checked off of my list!

    2. FRIXION PENS!

First of all, I am a HUGE cheerleader for Frixion Pens… (if you haven’t already heard me talk about them) I love the way they write. I love the way they mark on fabric and I LOVE the way they completely erase with heat… They’re magic. They erase like the markings on your fabric were never even there to begin with.

No more weird pencil marks or sketchy chalk markings that may or may not be gone when you get around to sewing… these pens leave crisp clean and super clear markings.

I even wrote an entire blog post about these pens…

Oh and I also made a video so you can see them in action:

Please note: I have had some quilter’s who have given me a few warnings when it comes to these pens…

If you live in an area where the temperature dips below freezing point… the frixion pen markings can have a tendency to resurface on your fabric. (obviously not desirable) Heat: erases your markings, cold brings them back.

You can just iron your fabric again, but this is a pain and is worth knowing about going into.

Personally, I live in Texas so… I have never encountered this issue personally. We have very warm weather and even our winters aren’t so bad, plus my quilts are stored inside a temperature controlled environment. — But take note of the information and choose your fabric marking utensils accordingly!

    3. IRONING ACCESSORIES!

Ironing is a big part of our lives… I usually like to have a few options for ironing. This is my favorite large-size iron and absolutely worth the long term investment.

This tiny ironing board is perfect to keep right next to your sewing machine for a quick seam press as you are sewing. – Especially as you are working with foundation paper piecing projects!

It is so cute and so little! It easily can tuck into a drawer or cabinet when not in use without any fuss.

This tiny iron is another absolute saving grace in my sewing studio because a I don’t often find myself ironing large pieces as much as I do little pieces or small seams.

The weight of a larger iron (not to mention the heat and steam) can be tiring on your wrists after long periods of time.

Tiny in size but powerful in uses and easily near the top of the list as most useful tool in your sewing room. Read more why THIS iron is my favorite...

Just FYI on a few other ironing tips, check out this post:

Do You have to press your seams? ...And other ironing rules answered in this detailed post about ironing! Who has the time? Do you really have to? Or is it just a suggestion?

This useful mat turns any surface, table or spare workspace into a safe place to iron! Besides being really affordable and a good space saver, it also has a safe silicone area to rest your hot iron in-between uses without any worry. um… bonus!

As far as a Crafty Girl Wish List, it doesn’t get more serious than asking for an iron or ironing accessories! lol πŸ˜‚

    4. SUPER CUTE NOTIONS!

I have met so many crafters who are absolute self-proclaimed “borderline hoarders” with their stash (and some of us can be a little delusional about the “borderline” part 🀣 lol)

But the truth is that we love pretty things, don’t we?

I love shopping the notions aisle at the craft show… so many little cute things that can be added to your space and bring you smiles every single time you walk in the room… oh boy!

Check out these Decorative Sewing Pins!

    And these beautiful Embroidery Scissors!

Basically, if you are looking for a gift for friend… you can’t go wrong with notions.

    5. QUILTING RULERS!

No matter how many years you’ve been quilting… your most-used tools are going to need replacing at some point.

If you’ve been quilting for only a short period of time, you’ll still be collecting your essential tool kit.

If you're looking to up your quilting game with some new tools, you're in luck! Don't just go buy what you THINK is going to be useful... read this first so you KNOW from a seasoned quilter what is going to be the best bang for your buck!

You can check out several deals on amazon for ruler starter packs and very specialized rulers as well. Click here to see the most popular and best-rated rulers.

    6. WOOL PRESSING MAT!

Another one that I hope you’re not sick of me talking about yet haha… but absolutely worth looking into is a wool pressing mat.

These are so worth the investment because they have taken over the sewing industry within the last few years and I’m starting to see them more and more. It is to the point where I am certainly not the only one talking about wool pressing mats anymore!

They come in many different sizes to fit your needs. from smaller 12×12 that fit comfortable next to your sewing machine all the way to larger mats that are better for ironing larger pieces of fabric.

My favorite one on Amazon is this one: https://amzn.to/34RRsUN

    7. LIGHTED TRACING TABLET!

If you’ve been curious or found yourself dabbling in either English Paper Piecing or Foundation Paper Piecing, I’m not going to sugar coat this… this should already be in your sewing room.

Even if you aren’t involved in paper piecing, but you like to alter your quilt patterns, try out different ideas, or even write your own patterns… this should already be in your sewing room!

They are super easy to use, store completely flat in a drawer or cabinet and are world of help!

This is the one I bought and I LOVE! I’ve had it for several years and it has held up like it is brand new with little effort.

    8. SEWING LOOP TURNER HOOK!

This one tends to be a more obscure tool that may not get a TON of usage, but when you do use it… you’ll be so thankful that you do have it!

This helps you when you are working on fabric straps or fabric “tubes”… this tool is your rescue to turn things right side out again!

There are many different versions on Amazon.

    9. SUBSCRIPTION BOXES!

There have been many wonderful inventions over the past several years… but the invention of the subscription box is near the top of my list… if anyone is curious.

I absolutely love these things! I have done several reviews on my YouTube channel for quilter/crafty boxes, but I also love to give them as gifts.

Do you know why I love to give them as gifts? Because it is so EASY!

Take a website like Crate Joy, for example…. they have everything categorized, tons of options to choose from and so many different variables to find something absolutely spot-on PERFECT for the person you are shopping for!

I also wrote a blog post with my Top 20 picks for Crafty Subscription boxes if you need a good creative boost or are curious about what is out there.

    10. TIME!

If you’re low on funds after the way this year has gone or your family has a limit on out of pocket money spent… you can’t go wrong with some quality time.

In lieu of expensive gifts, often times my sewing friends and I will opt for little trinkets (there is that troll-like sparkly hoarding tendency showing up again!) that make each other smile, hand made gifts, or just an entire day set up on the calendar where we can get together… even just an afternoon of quality time can make a world of a difference! We have blocked off days on the calendar for sewing in the past or made lunch dates followed by a stop at the local quilt shop to pick up a few treasures.

The options for this are kind of endless – but I always walk away completely refreshed and my heart so full of love for the ladies that I am blessed to call my friends and sewing sisters in this world.

Even a cup of coffee to catch-up with a friend or family member is enough of a reset to remind us what really matters during our busiest seasons in life and that is… connection! Being able to connect with your favorite people on this planet and enjoy their company is a priceless gift!

…Plus, if you’re already well into the crafty hoarder category… it will fill your heart up without emptying your wallet or filling up your space anymore! Win-win, right?

OK… so be honest with me… did I miss anything in this Crafty Girl Wish List? Is there anything in your crafty stash that you would be overjoyed to receive as a gift or anything in your collection that you couldn’t live without?

I would love to hear about it in the comments down below! ❀😍

Here are a few more things for you to check out!

  • My Favorite Ikea Products for the Sewing Room

During quarantine, I took up the task of working on updating my sewing/crafting room space.

I have looked through just about every possible furniture and organization structure available at Ikea. (every single one as of 2020!)

I am going to share my favorite Ikea products for the sewing room with you as well as which ones I ultimately chose to add in my space.

I’m going to organize this list in a few different categories so you can quickly scroll to what will help you the most.

    • Work surfaces
    • Chair/Seating
    • Furniture/Large Storage
    • Small Storage
    • Accessories

Note: Ikea nearly has it’s own language when it comes to product names… I feel it makes more sense if you just assume each product is like one of its children and while the name be unfamiliar to it, you can’t judge it based on the name alone. πŸ™‚ If something is really unfamiliar to you, just do a quick search for the product name and you’ll catch on eventually!

I LOVE shopping at Ikea, but it can get overwhelming! These are my Favorite Ikea Products for the Sewing Room! + Pictures!

    Work Surfaces

This is super important. You can have all the storage containers in the world but if you have nowhere to work… well, what’s the point?!

You want large flat surfaces that allow creative inspiration to strike.

It is also really nice if you can spread out and have space for allllll your pretty things while you’re working!

    Linnmon Table Top

The Linnmon line from Ikea is absolutely a crafter’s dream!

First thing you need to know it is kind of like a grown-up Lego set, ok? You pick the pieces you want and create something that perfectly fits your budget and your needs.

First, you pick your preferred size for the top – in many different colors to choose from depending on the size… As you can see, the prices are really quite affordable for a great workspace!

Next, you go about choosing the supports for your desktop…

Again, there are many choices… but if you’ve spent any amount of time on Pinterest, I bet you’ve seen the different variations of this classic Ikea product/workspace!

When you’re planning your workspace I find it really useful to pay attention to the sizing of the products. Certain Ikea lines were designed to work well with some but, not with others.

By clicking this link, you’ll see all the products that are included in the “table bar system”. i.e. They play nicely together. πŸ™‚

    Chairs & Seating

When considering seating options… forget putting money where your mouth is… put it where your um… never mind… The point is that it is important to invest in really good seating because this is a space that you’ll be working from for long periods of time.

This image shows proper sewing positioning and posture.

You really don’t want to be sitting in a position that is going to leave you with aches and pains after a few good long sewing sessions.

My absolute favorite sewing chair is this one right here.

I LOVE shopping at Ikea, but it can get overwhelming! These are my Favorite Ikea Products for the Sewing Room! + Pictures!

Doesn’t look like much, does it?

It is the SKALBERG/SPORREN model from Ikea. It is height adjustable! So I can get it exactly the height that I want it.

The one I own is white, but Ikea tends to roll out and test different markets with different colors so maybe you’ll be able to find it in a color that works for you!

The most important part is that this chair is really reallllly comfortable to sit in.

The shape just……. I’m going to say it… It holds your bottom perfectly, ok? There. I said it. It is really comfortable!

If you don’t have the budget for a new chair…

Let me introduce you to an inexpensive way to make your chair more comfortable and take the pressure off your spine…

You can get this weird cushion from amazon here. It looks like a weird alien chair or something but if you’ve ever got up from your sewing machine and been a little stiff… you’ll care less about looks than the support this comfy cushion provides!

    Furniture/Large Storage

Creative storage solutions are absolutely unavoidable if you’ve been a sewist for more than 10 minutes… you know how it is.

We just have a lot of stuff and while we don’t use 100% of it 100% of the time… you can’t get rid of it because you will use it one day or need to access it at some point.

Crafting is the gateway drug to full on hoarding.

My favorite Ikea products for the sewing room is the billy bookself.

I LOVE shopping at Ikea, but it can get overwhelming! These are my Favorite Ikea Products for the Sewing Room! + Pictures!

These shelves come in different widths and heights making it really easy to maximize your wall space.

Click here to see the entire Billy Bookshelf line.

If the open shelving isn’t the look you’re going for… guess what?! you have more options!

Ikea has created many options for you to choose from when it comes to doors that hide your storage solution.

This is also great if you want easy access/grab and go to your items but don’t really want them out on display 24/7 or you like a really streamlined and clean look to your room.

I LOVE shopping at Ikea, but it can get overwhelming! These are my Favorite Ikea Products for the Sewing Room! + Pictures!

    More furniture/storage ideas:

I have used the malm dresser in my sewing studio for many years. The contents have changed over the years as I rearrange my storage but I love the versatility!

The Kallax line has long been a popular staple in craft organization!

While the name and a few details have changed over the years… the function has not: Start with the basic structure… then customize it however you want!

The cube-like storage system comes in a variety of sizes with plenty of “insterts” to choose from including, drawers, cabinets, and shelving.

I’ve also recently grown so attached to the Havsta line – which… I think was designed to be a living-room furniture line? But… obviously it is able to move to wherever I put it. πŸ˜πŸ™Œ

Here it is in my sewing room…

    Small Storage

Once you have the big items down, small storage is important to divide up your space and be able to separate your tools.

I made a video for you where I shared some of the organizing techniques in my sewing room!

I really love these Kuggis bins! They are classic Ikea storage.

It is really helpful to label your boxes so you don’t forget about what is inside.

Personally, I’m still working on this in my sewing room as I have my boxes but I’m still playing with placement. I feel like I need to “live” in the room a bit before I’ve decided that everything has found its happy home. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

After that, I will be putting labels on all my pretty white boxes!

Here are a few suggestions for quick and easy labels!

If you have a desire for absolute perfection when it comes to organizing… I highly recommend you check out these books by The Home Edit.

I have been *addicted* and basically binged their entire series on Netflix (like a lot of other Americans stuck at home during quarantine?) before spinning around in my house looking for fun new projects to play with.

You can also check out some ideas on Amazon for small storage! Just double check your dimensions so you know it will fit with your Ikea products!

    More Ikea small storage options

I really have used these all over my house… but they’re really useful in the sewing studio too!

The Tenja series is a really economical way to get it done quickly and effectively categorize your craft room supplies.

These storage boxes come in a variety of prints and patterns (they also change out and get discontinued from time to time…)

    Accessories & Decor!

Whew, organizing is hard work… It really is!… but what makes it really special is the final touches around your space. The icing on the cake, the cherry on top… just that little sprinkle of pizzazz of your favorite items that make you want to jump up and down and shout with excitement!

    via GIPHY

These are my favorite accessories for that amazingly finished look to your sewing/crafting space!

    Fake plants

I love the feeling of good green happy plants around me… It is a mental projection of blossoming life all around me and creative energy circling through the atmosphere.

Unfortunately… the universe did not bless me with the ability to be able to keep happy healthy plants alive. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ I don’t know why. I’ve tried many times and tried my best… but you know what? My kids are happy and healthy and there is a bright side I can’t argue with lol

So I will supplement my love of plants with fake ones! The ones from Ikea I have to admit are really good. I mean, yes… they’re plastic, but unless you’re looking close (why would you judge me?) you can’t even tell.

I LOVE shopping at Ikea, but it can get overwhelming! These are my Favorite Ikea Products for the Sewing Room! + Pictures!

You’ll also find wonderful and affordable decorating items like:

    Shelving/Display Options

You can also grab some really handy wall shelves while you’re in store to show off all of your beautiful things!

I LOVE shopping at Ikea, but it can get overwhelming! These are my Favorite Ikea Products for the Sewing Room! + Pictures!

I like using the lack shelving system in my sewing room. It gives the illusion of a floating shelf, but is really really simple to install and is available in several different sizes and lengths.

Thank you for sticking it out with me to the very end of this post! I hope that you found it really inspiring and that maybe next time you’re at Ikea you can snag a few new products to make your sewing/crafting space a little more organized and your own personal haven!

  • CrateJoy Review Q&A – A gift for EVERYONE on your list!

If you have ever been at an absolute loss as to what to get someone for a gift, join the club… CrateJoy is about to solve all your problems in the most fun and fascinating way!

Thanks to the internet and having just about anything you could possibly want to be delivered to your house in as little as 2 days… and 2020 has made traipsing out for a day of shopping nearly impossible… It is time to get crafty with new ideas and ways to still celebrate the people that mean the most to you in your life!

Today, we’re talking about subscription boxes and I want to answer the most common questions so you can decide if it is a right fit for yourself or someone you love…

    What are subscription boxes?

If you haven’t heard of subscription boxes before, it is like a mystery box that gets delivered to your door every month.

You can use it as a way to treat yourself, or buy them as a perfectly curated gift for someone else.

The pricing for each month is the same but what is inside each box changes month-to-month. You’ll get a new surprise delivered each month!

While the contents change, you usually pick a larger “theme” for your subscription service… For example, a ‘Awesome socks’ subscription box that comes with obviously the coolest pair of socks every month! (It started out as gag gifts, but now my husband and my dad both have so many pairs of cool socks… and you know what? they LOVE them!)

If you're thinking of subscription boxes, check out my review of one of the most popular subscription box websites right now - CrateJoy

    What is CrateJoy?

CrateJoy is a website that is like an internet hub of ALLLLLLLLL kinds of subscription boxes. It is a can’t-go-wrong platform of information that you can use to source out the best subscription box for your needs.

    4. Check out the pricing information, look at further details, and check the reviews from past/current customers

    6. That’s it! When it is time for the delivery date, you’ll receive your first box of goodies!
    7. Note that depending on when you sign up, you may have to wait a few weeks for your box as these boxes ship out in bulk at the same time each month.
    8. You’ll continue to get a new box of themed goodies every month until you end your subscription!

It’s really easy, cool, and a lot of fun!

    kids subscription boxes

What kinds of themes are there to pick from?

Um, only absolutely everything under the sun!

Men, women, children, teen, crafty, food related, hobby related, books, beauty, fitness, wellness, even pets!

We have personally tried the monthly salsa club (my husband’s favorite gift from my mom ever) and I’ve given several boxes as gifts too.

What do I like about subscription boxes?

I don’t do it very often, but… If I am getting one for myself, I love that the theme is something I am interested in but the contents are a specially curated mix of items that I know I’ll just love.

If I am buying one for someone else, then I still love it because I pick something that is within their realm of interests and CrateJoy does the rest! It is easy and stress free! It so turns into a surprise for both of you!

What if I don’t like surprises?

If you can’t tell… I DO like surprises! – But if you would rather know what is in your box each month there are supscription companies that give you hints and will even show the contents of each box monthly so you can decide if you’re in or not.

You can also shop for past subscription boxes that there may have been extra product created. – this is a little harder to find and may take some internet sleuthing to find, but it is possible!

Do you have to sign up for a full year?

This is a really popular question. Especially if you’re looking at getting someone a gift!

Within CrateJoy, there is the option to “Give as a Gift” and THEN you can select exactly how much you want to commit to. You can do 1 month, 3 months even 6 months… each box may have different suggested time frames, but the idea behind it is you sign up for ONLY what you want.

If you do choose to sign up for multiple months, you don’t have to pay for it all at once either. Usually, you will be charged the agreed amount each month before your product ships.

What can I expect in my box?

This definitely depends on the box theme that you choose! In every single box that I have received, there is the value that I paid for it… and then there is the actual retail value of the box (which is often much higher than the first number).

Subscription box companies have the ability to buy in bulk and get a much deeper discount on items than buying just one at a time or in smaller quantities. A cool bonus for you and me, right?

So you’ll get a box of items related to your theme that add up to a greater value than what you paid for the box!

Below are a few videos of some quilting boxes that I have reviewed on my YouTube channel and you can watch the unboxing! Note: I’m such a nerd for surprises… and would never rehearse an unboxing video so what you see is what you get haha

Quilty Box Subscription Box – Tula Pink Edition

My honest opinion (and you know I will always be honest with you!) is that I really do love subscription boxes.

CrateJoy has the motherload of subscription boxes to choose from! It just makes it easier to find the right one and know that you’ve made the right choice too.

If you have any particularly favorite subscription box recommendations, let me know down in the comments down below. I would LOVE to hear about them!

  • What To Do With Leftover Quilt Batting Scraps

We usually have at least two leftover dinner nights in my house each week. We try to make use of what we have so it doesn’t go to waste. That’s the whole idea, right?

Did you know that you can take the same principle and apply it to your sewing room? If you have leftover quilt batting scraps laying around, don’t just let them collect or *gasp* throw them away! Put them to good use!

I prefer the term “collector” rather than “hoarder”… but if you don’t sugar coat it, the fact remains that after a while, my scrap drawer was over run with little saved bits and pieces.

Do you save your used batting scraps to use as fillers for pincushions and small pillows, dog beds, and random small projects here and there? Me too.

I would feel lucky if I could find the right size pieces intact to make a small wall hanging or a mugrug. (check out free mug rug patterns that I share in this post)

I overheard a term from another quilter in passing while shopping for fabric one day… she said, “I made a frankenbatting quilt with all of my scraps! You can’t even tell!”

    um, excuse me… WHAT?!?

Us quilters like to come up with a million different acronyms and cute sayings and nicknames for all of our tools… we’re adorable, aren’t we? 😘

However, to a newbie or self-taught quilter, it doesn’t make for a very even playing field!

Do you know all the terms that the professional quilters use? Check this list out and see where you stand. Pin it for later so you can refer back to this extensive list.

So, what in the world is “Frankenbatting”?

As I came to find out… it is simply the stitching together of all of your scraps to make “new” whole pieces of batting.

Sewing scrap pieces together to make larger, bigger “new” pieces… thats like the very definition of what quilters do, isn’t it?

BUT WITH BATTING! It is SO smart, right?!

And the best part?… If done correctly, no one will EVER know!

You wouldn’t believe how simple it is…

See this photo right here. It is a piece of my own “frankenbatting”.

Once this is covered up with a quilt top and back absolutely no one will ever know I used scraps and leftovers from other projects, right?

How to make Frankenbatting using leftover quilt batting scraps

    • Trim up your leftover quilt batting scraps. If you have wonky angled or curved edges, square them off evenly. Frankenbatting works well with nice square corners and even rectangles.
    • Take your pieces to your machine and press the edges next to each other without overlapping. This will help to create a seamless feel. No bumps or uneven areas of your quilts will show because it is all the same thickness.

You can see in the photo below that the edges just touch on the red line and do not overlap.
    • Stitch your pieces together. I like to use a nice wide zigzag stitch with a long stitch. (again, to minimize any extra layers or bulk within your finished quilt)

This is what the settings on my machine look like. I sew on a Janome 3160QDC.

If you’re in the market for a new sewing machine, check out this post: The Best Sewing Machine Deals on Amazon

And that is that. That is all it takes to use up your leftover quilt batting pieces and create brand new pieces… BIG pieces without spending anymore money.

It is a very simple idea that makes use of all your odds and ends of scrap batting… even trimmings from your quilts!

I may or may not have created a new obsession for you, but I hate to see good money being thrown into our trash cans! Don’t you?

If there is a use for it, we will find a way, right quilters?

I’ll be honest, it feels really good to be able to use those scrap pieces and turn them into something beautiful!

    TIPS TO KEEP IN MIND

I find that this really helps to have your pieces cut as even and square as possible.

Lay our your frankenbatting pieces out on a table before you start layering your quilt sandwiches. Make sure there there are no weird gathers, bumps or wrinkles! – Except for a few small almost invisible seams, the piece should look just like normal quilt batting.

Use a thread that is very similar in color to your batting. I usually just use my standard white cotton thread. My quilts tend to be very colorful and not a lot of large light-colored fabric areas. I could see how if you did have a large background and used a bright colored thread, it might show through your finished quilting… a disaster!

Do not limit yourself on the scraps you can sew together! I have used this technique for projects large and small! Quilted bins? Purses? Wall hangings? Large quilts? Small quilts? There is no limit!

This piece right here…. totally frankenbatting… but let’s keep that between you and me, ok? (or the rest of the internet too, I guess… why not?)

What do you do with leftover quilt batting scraps? I have a wonderful solution to turn them into frankenbatting... if that confuses you, it is not near as hard as it sounds. It's a great way to make use of leftovers!
  • 10 Answers To The Most Popular Quilting Questions

It has been a long while since I’ve sat down to write a blog post… honestly, it is 2020… so a few weeks might as well seem like a few years with all that has happened. Right?!? I’m really happy to be back writing educational blog posts that I hope this brings you answers to all of your quilting wonderings!

These are the quilting questions that most often come up in emails from quilters.

FYI – You’re always welcome to contact me if you have any questions. I’m available and happy to help sort out any issues you’re having or if you just need a second opinion. 😘

Hey, make sure and pin the image below so you can come back to this post whenever you need to!

Do you have quilting questions? Here are the answers to the 10 most popular questions quilters have! Plus links to free patterns and the know how to increase your quilting confidence and skills!

What stitch length should I use?

When I am quilting on my machine I like to stick to a 3.0 or a 3.2. (That is just personal preference. A longer stitch makes things go a little faster and it kind of resembles the classic hand quilting stitch length in my opinion.) When I am piecing, you’ll need a much smaller stitch length. I like to use a 2.2 or 2.4 length. Your pieces have less likely a chance of coming apart on the edges as well as a stronger hold on the quilt over time. You can read more and see pictures here.

Do I need a fancy sewing machine to start quilting?

This is often the biggest drawback for people who are just getting into quilting. wondering if you have to spend a lot of money to get a “good” sewing machine. The answer is no, it doesn’t have to be fancy and have all the bells and whistles. Some of those bells are nice later on if you want to experiment more but the only requirement is that the machine is in good working order. The less trouble shooting you have to be doing, the more time you can spend sewing and enjoying your craft.

The other thing to consider is making sure that the sewing machine you choose has a wide throat for quilting. The “throat” is the open part in between where your needle sews and the outer right side of your machine. Once you start quilting, you’ll end up rolling your quilt up and feeding it through that space. the tighter it is, the harder you’re going to find the quilt struggle will be.

You can also read this post about the best sewing machine deals as well as read more about the machine I chose and why I absolutely LOVE my Janome machine.

What do you suggest for quilting/craft room organization?

Well… I suggest what works best for your brain.

If you’re a really neat and tidy (everything has it’s place, order is king) then you need to work with that and design your space around that mentality…

If you’re good with just a box to throw your tools in or a few drawers where things are roughly where you know where they should be… work with that.

I have lots of posts on organization, but I can’t stress enough that as beautiful as some of those spaces may turn out to be… you can’t fight who you truly are! Once you find a perfect blend of your personality and a way to organize your tools… THATS when you find the perfect sweet spot of contentment.

Here is a list of my favorite tools and organization products: My Favorite Things

Um… Triangles are hard & scary! Help?

Yes, they SEEM hard… but you can do them! (and I promise you won’t shed a tear while you do it!) Check out this FREE pattern of mine πŸ™‚ You can get it here. I give you a way to make a wonderful triangle quilt without all the fuss and not one single Y seam!

What is a good pattern for a beginner quilter?

How detailed do you want to get? Simple Free patterns like the ones in this post and this one are a good place to start. Find a pattern that you LOVE. Make sure it doesn’t have a whole lot of curves or odd sized pieces. And if you can… make sure you have a quilting friend you can call on if you need help.

I can’t seem to get my seams/corners to line up?

There are a few things you need to check on this one.

    1) Are all of your pieces cut accurately? If yes, then...

    2) Are all of your seams an even 1/4″ (or whatever the pattern specifies?) It may not seem like it but the tiny-est fraction of an inch can throw off your row of fabric and by the end of it you’ll have no hope of getting those seams to line up. If they are accurate and consistent…

    3) Have you tried nesting your seams? This is a method in which you can get the seams to sit right when you’re sewing that will keep them from shifting under your needle. Check out this video below.

Where can I get deals on fabrics?

Hey, we all try to save when we can. What we do isn’t a cheap hobby.

I have lots of suggestions for getting the best deals on fabrics for you!

If you are shopping and you happen to find a really good deal on fabric, stock up. You can use simple fabrics for backings or incorporate it with other more expensive fabrics to keep the overall cost down.

$2 a Yard on Fabric? - Is this for real?! WOW! These 6 tips are an awesome game changer in the fabric store!

Check the remnant bin when you shop. A lot of times you’ll find odds and ends of bolts that are around 15-30% off just to get rid of anything that is less than a yard… aka a “remnant” fabric.

Always check for coupons or discounts. Big chain stores tend to jack up their prices a little bit so they can offer super good coupons every once in a while and we all feel like we’re getting an amazing deal. It is kind of a part of shopping now in just about every industry… so knowing this, USE those coupons! Don’t pay full price for it if you can help it.

In smaller quilt shops, don’t be afraid to ask if they have any type of frequent buyer program or coupon programs. My local quilt shop offers a 10% discount to quilt guild memberships.

They also give you a $25 gift card when you spend a certain amount… I always turn right around and use it in their store right away haha but still! Yay for more fabric, right?!

    Every little bit helps!

What do all the quilting abbreviations and terms mean?

When you’re first starting out it is almost like some secret alien language that you’re forced to try and decipher…. QAL? WIP? RST? HST? …….WHAT THE WHAT?

I made a long list of really helpful terms that you will probably run across at one point or another on your quilting journey.

We quilters might be a little odd at times, but we’re not aliens… you’ll pick up on the terminology rather quickly with this FREE handy guide.

Do you know all the terms that the professional quilters use? Check this list out and see where you stand. Pin it for later so you can refer back to this extensive list.

Do you have tips on caring for your quilt to make it last?

Yes! When I first started quilting, my kids were little and I was completely germ-paranoid… My solution (for everything) was to wash on extra hot setting in the washer and basically boil away any dirt on my precious quilts.

Seems like the best solution, right?

Wrong. Once I learned better, I started washing my quilts differently and I can completely tell the difference in wear and tear from those first sweet quilts.

We spend so much time, energy and money making these quilts… you really want to give them their best shot at lasting at least as long as you do, right? One would hope that these quilts will be treasured gifts from you for loved ones to hold onto, snuggle under, use and pass on down to another generation in the future!

I can’t change the fate of my first few quilts… but I can make sure that people out there don’t follow their instincts and make the same mistakes.

I created a FREE download that has resonated with so many quilters. I actually created and designed it so nicely that you can GIFT it with your quilts and rest easy knowing the recipient will know how to care for their quilts too!

Save the quilts of the world, my friends!

Which brings me to… what should I gift with my quilt?

As if your time, blood sweat and (probably) tears weren’t enough! – Make sure that your recipient knows how much you put into making their quilt.

You don’t have to brag or go into a long detailed story about the night you were up until 4am picking out stubborn seams and going cross eyed… but I think people who don’t quilt don’t quite understand the level of intuition and creative planning that goes into making a quilt.

We don’t just slap some fabric scraps together and stitch it up real quick… no. There are so many steps involved!

Thats why with the above Quilt Care 101 Download I also included a Quilt history form so that you can record those little details that went into making the quilt. Maybe state the reason why you chose the color pink and why the pattern with peony flowers represents the strength you see in your future granddaughter, even though she is 2 years old and fierce as can be. She will ADORE reading about it one day.

I think those memories are really important to record.

I also have a list of 4 Important things you should do when you gift a quilt (psst… I already told you about the quilt care sheet so… really, there are only 3 more things, but they’re pretty important so don’t skip them!)

I hope that I’ve answered some of your most important questions. If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me. I’m happy to help!

    Happy Sewing!

  • How To Maintain Your Creative Focus

Raise your hand if you are a victim of Shiny Object Syndrome?…. ? I have some tips that just might make your life a little easier if you are looking to maintain your creative focus!

Let’s talk about it a little bit more… Do you find it easy to pick one project and see it through all the way to completion or do you have at least seven projects going on in varying stages of completion right now?

    via GIPHY

If you have Shiny Object Syndrome – you have trouble maintaining your creative focus… you may feel easily bored with large projects (even though they started out with good intentions!).

You might bounce around between multiple creative outlets or projects or claim to have multiple hobbies or an indecisive soul where you dabble in a little bit of everything.

As an avid quilter, you might find a new pattern that makes you get excited and dream a little bit with heart eyes! So, naturally, you buy it and immediately dive into it when you get home… even though you have multiple projects at home that aren’t quite finished yet still sitting on your work table – OR – You add it to your file drawer of other patterns that are on your “someday” list.

Do you have Shiny Object Syndrome?

If it does sound like you, it is totally ok!

As crafters, we all have a little Shiny Object Syndrome in us… we can’t help it!

    via GIPHY

In my case, I blame glitter as my main weakness. Literally “Shiny objects”.

…Oh, also anything with bright happy colors.

And pretty flowers, I like those too…

Wait… what were we talking about? Oh yeah, getting easily distracted and having too many projects going on to be able to maintain creative focus. Riiiiiight.

I have some advice for you today on how to Maintain Your Creative Focus!

Just so you know… this isn’t a “do it once, fix it forever” solution.

As an artist, and avid crafty girl at heart, I still struggle with this every single day.

BUT, I think that knowing your weaknesses and accepting them as a part of who you are can really go a long way in changing your habits and making sure that you adjust your daily life to help you reach your goals.

Hey! pin this image so you’ll be able to find this list when you need it!

    Tips that help me:

    1. Maintain a relatively clean environment around you

It doesn’t have to pass a white glove test!

Just think about all the times you’ve gone looking for your scissors and came across a magazine you’ve been wanting to read. Then, you pulled out a recipe from the magazine and made a note to call a friend about dinner next week. You look around some more and try to fold a few pieces of stray fabric from your last shopping trip.

Before you know it, 10 minutes have gone by, you may or may not have located your scissors, but you certainly let 10 minutes go by without productivity on your current project.

Assume that you had your sewing tools organized and you knew right where your scissors were located, you wouldn’t have had the opportunity to get distracted by the magazine and all the other wonderful things that you found along the way. You would just go get your scissors and get to work.

Time is a precious thing for us busy girls, right? Don’t set yourself up to waste a single second of it!

If you need a little help in that area, I created a workbook that will get your sewing/crafting space in tip-top shape! Through the course of Just25 Days, you determine and actually create the space of your dreams that WILL WORK FOR YOU! It is one of my most popular downloads. (PS – THIS link will get you a special 20% off deal!)

I also have several posts where I talk about organization and how to make the time spent in your sewing room more efficient.

    2) Decide what is important to you and prioritize it

If you have five projects that have been hanging over your head, put them in order of importance, and challenge yourself to work on them in that order.

Whatever you deem as “importance”. It could be:

    • Needs the least amount of work to be finished
    • The due date is the soonest
    • The project I feel like working on the most?

I have done this multiple times in my Sewing challenges! It helps you work on your focus by keeping your attention on ONLY these projects until they are finished. (and you usually can reward yourself with something fun after… because it is more fun that way!)

It is a fantastic way to get things checked off of your to-do list and maintain your creative focus for a determined amount of time.

Check out more about my past challenges in these posts below:

    3) PLAN for Creativity

I actually schedule my creativity time throughout the week – Just like I would a doctor’s appointment or a visit with a friend.

Some weeks there is less time to sew than other weeks (and that’s ok!).

I find that if I am intentional with my time, it makes it harder for me to justify wasting any of it.

Going through a rough day knowing that I have a scheduled date with my sewing machine the following afternoon makes things much easier and I know that I’ve made my sanity a priority.

    4) What Brings The Most Joy?

Why did you decide to be a quilter?

Why do you work on crafty projects and bother with complicated projects that take both our time and our money?

For me, it is because in my very soul I believe I am an artist and I was put on this earth to create beautiful things. I enjoy it. It brings me great joy when I get to work with my hands.

When you’ve got a project that brings you joy, you’re naturally going to want to spend your time working on it. Keep your passion projects to only a few at a time and don’t allow for any more before you’ve completed them or you’ll feel overwhelmed and more likely to stray into other shiny projects.

Feeling like you have Shiny Object Syndrome? Check out these 5 tips to Maintain your Creative focus and be your MOST productive self!

    5) Get Real Honest

*Note*: I saved this one for last because it is the most important one on the list, but it is also my least favorite tip. Sorry…

The easiest way to maintain your creative focus on the projects that you are currently working on is to put your head down and quit adding more things to your to-do list!

Hide the pen, put away your credit card, save it to a Pinterest board, and don’t give it another thought!

Let’s use this example: If you’re going to plan a small get together and have room for 4 couples at your dinner table… Are you going to invite 400 guests?!?

Obviously not! That would be ridiculous and a disaster.

When it comes to choosing the projects that you work on, be extra choosy with what you work on. Only take on what you can fit on your schedule right now…

Learn how to say no. I know, Easier said than done sometimes, but start working on it. It is an important skill to have.

You’re allowed to have multiple projects going on at the same time (if you can handle it) but there is no need overwhelm yourself so much that what you once enjoyed is now a major stressor in your life!

I hope you found these tips helpful! Let me know down in the comments below if you have any other suggestions on how to keep your creative focus!
