  • 8 Reasons Why You Should Shop At Local Quilt Shops

It’s so easy to get caught up in the big sales online, isn’t it? Big Box stores can offer big deep discounts when they want to… And you never even have to leave your living room chair. With all the ease, it might be easy to never leave your house!

Check out the bottom of this post for finding quilt shops in your area. Don’t be afraid to go on a little adventure to the other side of town every now and then… you may just find the fabric shop of your dreams!

Here are 8 Reasons Why You Should Consider Shopping Local Quilt Shops vs. Big Box Stores. This list goes deeper than just FREE shipping!

Here is why you should shop at local quilt shops!

    1. When you shop local, you’re making a personal investment in your neighborhood and your community.

It is said that for every $100 spent locally, roughly $68-$73 of it return to local activity! Wow!

When you shop at local quilt shops you are individually stimulating the local economy with your support and in turn, helping shape your community’s unique character and personality.

    2. The ladies in local quilt shops are the best of the best!

Every single quilt shop I’ve been inside (and I usually try to hit up at least 1 or 2 when we travel) has the best people inside it! Friendly faces and smiles that are all too happy to have quilty conversations with you!

Also, other customers… who isn’t happy when you’re shopping for fabrics? Everyone is happy happy happy!

    3. Quilt Shops will go the extra mile for you

Because the employees are likely personally invested in the fabric curating and selection as well as displays and collections they are selling, they are more likely to go the extra mile for their customers.

These ladies are extremely knowledgeable about their fabrics, their selection and will even help you pull together a quilt color palette if you’re having a hard time. They live and breathe fabric every single day and they are the masters of it.

For more info on curating your own fabric selection, check out this post.

    4. Non-profits receive more support from Local Businesses

Local business owners provide significant support for non-profits. i.e. Quilt shop owners are just really really nice people! Non-Profits receive as much as 350% more money from local shops that non-locally owned businesses.

So, your money actually reaches even further to help the community!

    5. A more defined selection

I’m not going to lie, the selection that you will find at a local quilt shop is so carefully crafted and refined to the requests of your community, it is unreal. Want local baseball team fabric? boom.

What is it that your quilting group is into right now? – Chances are that you’ll find something to meet those needs in your local quilt shop. If not, all you have to do is request a certain product and I’m sure they will be happy to carry it for you!

    6. CLASSES! Learn something new!

My local quilt shop hosts numerous group activities and classes each month… you’ll never be bored. You can learn a new skill taught by another local, or check the schedule for a meetup of another traveling quilter!

Meet new friends, ask specific questions and get one on one help. Make sure to ask your local quilt shop if they have a calendar of events so you can start scheduling your quilting education!

If you’re looking for something very specific that your local Quilt shop doesn’t offer… I am always happy to point people towards BluePrint. They’re online classes are very informative and really good at breaking down the steps.

    Watch writing classes at myBluprint.com

    7. Create Local Jobs – Maybe even for you?

Another benefit for your community is more jobs… perhaps even a position open for you if you’re in the market for some part-time work! Maybe you’re retired and need a little extra spending money (or more money for fabric)

Do you have a skill that you think other people could benefit from? Perhaps you could hold a class?

    8. You don’t have to pay to ship or wait for your mail person to bring your fabric!

This one is self-explanatory but it is worth mentioning… especially if you are impatient like I am. When I am inspired by a great idea or a beautiful vision for a quilt project… I want to start now, like right now… not 3-5 business days from now.

Here are 8 Reasons Why You Should Consider Shopping Local Quilt Shops vs. Big Box Stores. This list goes deeper than just FREE shipping!

How Do I Find Local Quilt Shops?

The first thing you can do to find your local quilt shops is to ask around! Ask where your quilting friends shop. See if your guild has any recommendations!

Another way you can find local quilt shops is to give google a search for “quilt shop in your town” or “fabric shop in your town“. You might just be surprised to find a few little shops you didn’t even know existed!

Read the reviews online and make sure it is in a safe area before you venture out but don’t be afraid to go to an area of town you haven’t frequented before.

Make an adventure out of it!

If you live in a big city, chances are that you have at least a few quilt shops around you. But don’t forget to search the small towns around your area!

Small towns are full of wonderful small businesses that can use some good local business as well!

You can even get a few girlfriends together and make a day of it by carpooling and getting out of town for a change of scenery (oh, and getting some fabric too, of course!)

I live in Houston, Texas (no lack of anything here!) and my favorite quilt shop is a place called Quilter’s Crossing 🙂 You can check out their website here.

Tell me about your favorite local quilt shops! Write your town and your quilt shop in the comments below.

  • Psychology of Quilt Colors – What do your quilt colors mean?

Have you ever wondered “What do your quilt colors mean?” What is the psychology of quilt colors behind each quilt?

Colors and the feelings that they inspire are so ingrained into our brains that often times we don’t even think about it anymore!

What do your quilt colors mean? Unlock the psychology of your quilt colors and discover the hidden messages you can include in every single one of your quilts!

Think about just a few colors for example…

Sunny Yellow – feelings of warmth, happiness, sunshine and fun!

Blues – feelings of calm, serene and, comfort

By changing up the colors in your quilt, you could potentially send invisible messages that translate into all kinds of different feelings for the end user of the quilt!

With this theory, a healing quilt will likely have a different vibe of colors from a picnic quilt, right?

What is the message that your quilt is trying to tell? What do your quilt colors mean?

Let us dive right in and look at some more Psychology of Quilt Colors.

This bright color is more than just little girl ribbons and bubble gum! This bold color is often linked with feelings of joyfulness, creativity, and glamour. It is vibrant and refreshing and euphoric. I’m also going to add in here that this one is my favorite to work with 😉

A rose-colored pink suggests femininity and a softer calming color associated with love, kindness, and femininity.

Red is most associated with energy, passion, and action. It is a warm color that attracts attention more than any other color.

Orange is a combination of yellow and red and is considered an energetic color. Orange calls to mind feelings of excitement, enthusiasm, and warmth. I love to pair a bright orange with a blue on quilts!

Peach colors are excellent for a happy or healing quilt. It exudes calmness and warmth.

Yellow is the color most associated with happiness and optimism, as well as creativity. It is also associated with warmth and a sunny blue sky feeling.

Pale or Pastel Yellow has the same psychology as sunny yellow but is a bit more subdued. It is the color of energy, enthusiasm, hope, fun, and cheerfulness. I love to use yellow on gender neutral baby quilts.

Green is a color the symbolizes renewal and growth. It is the color you see the most in the natural environment… It resonates with inner energy, rebalancing.

This shade of green is heavier on yellow tones and signifies youthful energy as well as harmony and renewal.

Teal, or turquoise, is a very soothing color to add into your quilts. It creates emotional balance and stability. Teal can conjure feelings of clarity, balance, creativity, compassion, and self-sufficiency.

Did you know that blue is the most popular “favorite color” in the world? Blue is often viewed as conservative and traditional. It signifies feelings of calm and serenity. Blue is peaceful, tranquil, secure, and orderly. It does not hold the same feelings of energy that warmer color tones have.

Cool or light blue holds the same psychology and feelings that a navy blue holds. It is often seen as a sign of stability and reliability

The color lilac symbolizes friendliness and having an open mind. The color is said to help reduce antisocial behavior and aggression by encouraging emotional expression. It is a very soothing color for a lot of people.

Purple is often associated with luxury, power, wisdom, creativity, and magic! What a power color, right? Purple is often uplifting and self affirming.

Grey has a mix of meanings that really depends on the end user of your quilt. Grey can represent neutrality and balance. However, grey can carry some negative connotations as the absence of color can make it feel dull or empty. I love greys, and often pair them with a brighter color in my quilts.

Have you ever added a little sparkle and shine to your quilts? Perhaps with a metallic fabric or a silvery thread? The color silver is associated with meanings of industrial, sleek, high-tech, and modern, as well as ornate, glamorous, graceful, sophisticated, and elegant.

Brown is a natural color that evokes a sense of strength and reliability. It’s often seen as solid, much like the earth. Brown is often associated with resilience, dependability, security, and safety. It also makes for a very masculine quilt.

Whew… so there you have it!

Colors are the secret code behind everything in this world. So next time you arere trying to pull a color pallet together with your fabrics, think back to the psychology of your fabric choices and decide … just What do your quilt colors mean?

…And then ask yourself… what is it you want your quilt to say?

Do you ever give thought to color psychology when creating your quilts? or do you just go with what you feel matches based on gut feelings and personal preference? Let me know in the comments below!

  • How Much Is My Quilt Worth?

Whether you’re looking to sell your quilts or you’re just curious how much your skills are worth… I’m sure you have at one point or another asked yourself…”How much is my quilt worth?”

Sometimes you can’t put a price on your creativity because the feeling of joy you get from it is priceless, but there are other times that you absolutely can put a price on your talents…

I get this question from well-meaning friends and family all the time… “How much would it cost for you to make me… Insert some vague idea of a quilt plan here….”

Maybe you’ve come across this question too? You don’t want to shoot too high and scare off the curious admirer of your great talents, but you also don’t want to lowball yourself or your time involved in making a quilt.

Let’s be honest here that quilting is NOT a cheap hobby, right? There is the cost of the fabric, the time spent planning and coordinating fabrics, time and tools spent cutting, piecing and ripping and piecing again. Then, there is the cost of the batting, the backing and the time spent quilting or hiring a long armer to quilt it for you, finish up with the binding and my my my… you truly have a one of a kind work of heART!

There have been a few quilts that I have spent more time working on over a period of about a week than I did some of my close family members. Ouch, right?

But you can’t exactly charge 5 million dollars for a quilt… can you?

So how DO you put a price on your lovely creation?

The simple answer is that it is not so simple. There is a LOT that factors into the pricing of a quilt, including the level and details of the quilt.

    Today is your lucky day!

I have created a FREE worksheet download to help you judge just how much your quilt is worth, taking into account, time, fabric costs, details etc.

So next time someone asks you “what would you charge for….?” You’ll be ready and have a fair number in mind and be able to answer the looming question, “How Much Is My Quilt Worth?”

Why Should I Share This Information?

You may also choose to include this form with your quilt when you gift it… not to rub their nose in all you have spent creating it… though you’re free to do so if you choose… but so that the quilt giftee has a better understanding of the valuable gift they have lovingly received from you.

Hopefully, they will be encouraged to take care of your lovely quilt, cherish it and will not turn it into a dog bed (that absolutely happened to me, I swear).

The end goal is to educate yourself and the rest of the world what a valuable talent you have. After all, when you can buy a $17 throw from Target… it is hard to imagine the cost of a custom throw sized quilt being easily over $400!

It is a fair assumption that I have absolutely no idea how to calculate the speed of a flying rocket in outer space…. but NASA does.

You can’t blame the people who just don’t understand the ins and outs of the quilting world… but you can teach those that are curious!

Disclaimer: If you are looking to have a quilt appraised for insurance purposes or you have an antique quilt with a special history, I suggest finding a certified quilt appraiser to help you out. They are trained magnificently in what they do and can give you exact worth values and replacement values. My Quilt Worth form is for informational purposes only.

FREE Download Worksheet to calculate just how much your quilt is worth so next time you get the question... "How much would you charge for..." you'll know exactly what your time and resources are worth!

  • Every Busy Quilter Should Focus On These 5 Things

You’re a busy quilter, I’m a busy quilter… How often does this conversation play out between you and um… any other person that crosses your path??

    “Hey! How are you?”
“Good! But OMG, I’ve been so BUSY!”

I don’t see that adjective, “busy” changing anytime soon, do you? I’m also a super busy mom of 2 kids, a wife, and a business owner… Things can get a little crazy hectic here every once in a while (aka every single day).

So while I have lots of quilting I WANT to work on and usually like 4 (or 400) projects that need finishing… I still have all the regular house stuff and human stuff to do to. Laundry, dishes, shopping, etc It is exhausting and it can feel like there are NOT enough hours in the day.

So how do you keep your sanity without setting your quilting aside for later?

When life gets rough and I want to curl up in a corner with my *good chocolate* (from the stash that my kids don’t know about)… I know its time to focus on the productivity hacks that bring me back to feeling more like Wonder Woman as opposed to Crazy Girl.

And today, I’m going to share them with you!

So you can go from feeling like this:

    via GIPHY

    To feeling more like this:

Do you know what I mean by just those 2 images? Tell me fellow, busy quilter, that you get me! Please, oh please!

Wonder Woman feeling says “Yes, I can handle this” It is that little kick in the pants that says “I got this”.

I love that. I want to be HER

The 5 things you should be focusing on as a busy quilter

    1. Be honest with yourself – Are you taking on more than ONE human possibly can (or should) handle?

This can go for over-scheduling your calendar, too heavy of a load from work or even the number of quilts you’ve committed to making (I joke, that there is no such thing but yes… if it is stressing you out, there most certainly IS such a thing!)

It is perfectly OK to admit that you’re not a super-human hybrid machine. — Even though I like to believe I totally am some days.

It is best to be honest with yourself when you’re feeling overwhelmed.

If your workload is something you wouldn’t expect your best friend to take on, perhaps you shouldn’t take it on your shoulders either.

Every Busy Quilter should focus on these 5 things to really up their quilting game! Work on these small changes for a BIG impact!

    2. Schedule your quilting time in your calendar

This works 2 ways… either you look up at the clock and realize you’ve been hunched over this quilt for 4 hours and suddenly it is now dark outside and WAY past your bedtime. Oh yeah, and you didn’t get a single other thing done today. Oops.

-OR- You feel like your schedule is so busy that there isn’t a single moment in the day to even think about quilting (*insert crying here*)

Those days are tough, honey. I hear you here.

Schedule your downtime and your quilting time like you do any other event in your calendar! and then, the hard part, stick to it. Set alarms, get a friend to call you – do what you gotta do!

This will ensure that you get the quilting time that makes you feel like you’re making the desired progress on your quilts.

Putting quilting as an appointment in my calendar is seriously the only way I really get to quilt in productive chunks of time vs. tiny 10-minute increments.

Expert tip: Putting on a TV show or a movie is a great way to keep track of time while you’re working on your quilt. Hours can go by so fast when you’re really focused.

Nesting your seams is a VITAL tool in quilting. It will help you get that finished and polished look on your quilt and cut out those rookie mistakes where your corners shift and seams don't line up. This is an easy trick that any quilter can use! Try it out on your next quilt. You won't be sorry!
Learn more about what it means to “nest your seams” and get those seams to meet perfectly in your piecing. This is a HUGE step in improving wonky piecing.

    3. Always look for the next project that will grow your skills

I’ll admit that I’m not the best at being disciplined enough to finish what I’m currently working on before I start a brand new project.

Even though I really do try to keep my projects to a reasonable number…

I’ve seen other quilter’s project lists and studios filled with WIPs or UFOs. Work in progress or Unfinished objects I know I’m not the only impatient one! – Want to know more quilting slang? check out this post WHAT IS THE QUILTER’S CODE? )

Still, if you’re going to be quilting, you might as well make sure that you’re constantly growing your skills and trying new things!

You can read more about continuing to challenge yourself in quilting. Why you should step out of your comfort zone.

    4. Organize What You Have – Including Current Projects

Ever missed a deadline you had? Or had to double up your sewing efforts to finish a quilt on time? Or miscalculated and had to give a quilt late? (*Guilty*, yep, yep, and yep!)

I got frustrated mostly by my own miscalculations. Then, I decided I needed a way to write everything down in a way that kept me organized and made it impossible for me to forget any key parts, dates etc.

Download this FREE quilt planner and get organized so that you can create more! 6 pages of everything you need. nothing you don't!

What actually happened was I created a handy way to log every single quilt that I made over the period of a year… and wow. Not to pat myself on the back but yes… I totally was patting myself on the back.

It pays to take a look at the larger picture instead of hyper focusing on just one quilt at a time 🙂

You can read more about the FREE 6 Page Planner here or you can simply tell me where to send the FREE download by filling out the little form below! Totally FREE 🙂 My gift of sanity to you, busy quilter!

    5. Take Care Of Yourself

(Honestly, I thought about putting this one at the top of my list.) How many times do we tell someone to “take care” but never really give it much more thought than that?

This is my momma-self coming out to give you a little love, ok?

    — I promise I’ll keep it short and sweet! —

If an apple tree doesn’t get what it really needs nutrient wise, it still gets to be a tree. It can still make it through another season or so, but it doesn’t produce good fruit.

Do you understand where I’m coming from? The tree doesn’t get to do what it was made to do when it was planted…

….BUT YOU, my sweet beautiful busy quilter, you are so much more complex than an apple tree!

    • You need to be loved.
    • I want you to laugh so hard you can’t catch your breath.
    • You need to spend time on the phone with an old friend to reminisce silly old memories.
    • Please consider establishing a self-care routine that you do everyday for YOURSELF because it makes you feel good.
    • You need a decent bedtime and perhaps a nap every now and then,
    • You need to find a good song. Then, turn it up so loud you can’t even hear yourself sing badly to it.
    • Insert whatever geeky/silly dance moves you want to add in too!
    • You need to pull out your quilts that haven’t had a good cuddle in a while. Curl up with a book or a movie. You can study your past quilts and see how your skills are improving!
    • And you should eat a vegetable every day – there, I said it.

Take care of YOU… because inside you is greatness and the world needs more of it!

Want to up your quilting game? Focusing on these 5 things is going to make sure that you stay amazing!

Keep being a busy quilter. Keep focusing on these 5 things continue being an amazing quilter that has a good head on your shoulders!

  • DIY Fabric Bookmarks – What to do and what NOT to do

I made something fun yesterday. *Spoiler alert* It’s not a quilt! (gasp, I know) and I just had to share it with you because it is so simple and so quick that you just HAVE to block off your schedule. There I said it. Forget your adulting responsibilities or whatever you have and make these DIY fabric bookmarks tonight! … no really, you’re going to love them!

I went into this cute little boutique shop the other day – you know the one… where everything is handmade by amazing artisans and you instantly desperately wish you could afford to take it all home with you? Yeah… I was smitten by some earrings that spoke down to my very soul I tell you… But the price tag and I did not see eye to eye. Cest la vie.

At the register, they had these cute little fabric bookmarks for the corners of your books. I immediately wanted to buy them all… but the DIY-er inside me got the best of me and I said: “I can make that, and make it cuter too.”

    DIY Fabric Bookmarks

    Scrap Fabric to the rescuuuuuuuueeeeee!

Side note: My family needs bookmarks. Like, thousands of them… We love to read. I don’t know why none of us can just read one book at a time. It is one of the great mysteries in life.

First, I went and I found all the tiny of my most favorite scraps that I stashed away for a “one day I’ll use this” project. (This was my favorite part! finding uses for pretty fabric that would have otherwise just stayed in my drawer forever)

Just look at the pretty fabrics!

Step by step – How I did it

I started with little 2.5″ squares of random (but oh so cute!) scrap fabric.

I thought perhaps it would be precious to make the bookmark look quilted… (I’m a quilter to my very core, you know) but it didn’t prove to be my best idea as it was a little too thick between the book pages and made the corners harder to square.

So ignore the batting squares in the photos… that is just when I THOUGHT I knew what I was doing 😉

    To make the angled piece:

For the angled piece, I folded the 2.5″ square (wrong sides together) along the diagonal and pressed with my iron. Easy peasy.

There is no need to sew it as the next few steps will keep everything in place in the finished product.

How to layer your fabric pieces:

Layer your fabric pieces in this order…

    1. Fabric 1, Right Side up.
    2. Angled/corner fabric
    3. Fabric 2, Right side down.

All sides should match up evenly.

    Get ready to sew!

Up until this part, everything was grand! Here is where things were a little unclear and I had to make it up as I went.

Let’s first go over what didn’t work and then I will share with you what ended up being the winning process!

    What not to do…

I tried stitching at 1/4″ from the edges of the square because I LOVE my 1/4″ sewing foot (read more about it here) and I found that the corners were too bulky when I turned the piece right side out.

I couldn’t get the nice crisp square corners that I was looking for… See below how round the sides ended up being?

Another mistake: I did not leave a large enough hole to turn the piece right side out the first go-around. This made things a little more difficult than they needed to be. (I’m totally stubborn so still made it work)

    What DID work…

I tried sewing 1/8″ from the edges and it was juuuuuust right 🙂 Perfect solution to those bulky corners!

FYI: You can purchase my Straight Seam Guide with easy to read measurements in my shop!

I also left a little larger section un-sewn so I could turn the piece right side out a little easier too…. this really made things less cumbersome.

To get those nice square corners, I pulled out one of my favorite weird sewing tools… a Chinese take-out chopstick! Unused on my general tsos, of course. These work great for shaping the corners.

It really helps to push it up into those corners and move the fabric around to where you want it to go.

Next, I pressed the piece to get those corners and seams even more crisp, because I knew that after the next step… there was no going back!

We still have to deal with the open side that was used to turn our DIY fabric bookmark right side out.

You can deal with this one of 2 ways.

    1. Get out your needle and thread and ladder stitch it closed by hand… or
    2. Tuck the ends in, press it and make sure you catch the raw edges in when you sew! (duh, I chose this one because… obviously faster, right?)

Last step! How to finish the edges:

    What didn’t work…

The first thing that I tried was a zig-zag stitch because I love that look… Yeah yeah, it looks terrible. I know. I’m not that great at it because I have terrible patience in letting it do its thing and it usually ends up looking like a mess.

So even though I like that look, I decided that THIS was not the project for it if my focus was quick and easy…

    What DID work…

Next I tried a smaller zig-zag and kept my needle about 1/8″ in from the edge to make sure I caught the unfinished edges of the opening.

I really liked this one – but the corners are a little awkward for me on the zig-zag stitch.

I feel that unless I perfect that… it is always going to look a little more “amateur” DIY-er and not polished professional sew-ist, like I was going for… but It did the job just fine and even added a little decorative look to the bookmark.

Simple really is sometimes the best solution!

Lastly, I just stuck it through with the plain old boring standard straight stitch. (Like I should have done in the first place)

I made several more after I finished this one and I have squares cut for dozens more (yes, I told you we’re crazy people over here!)

You could seriously have yourself a HUGE stash of these in just a few hours one afternoon.

My most favorite part about these is how many people I know who would LOVE these… I’m thinking just about everyone will get one of these for Christmas or a birthday or… arbor day perhaps? …I don’t know!

I could see these being a peppy addition to guild swaps, cooking classes, book clubs, Kid’s gifts, classroom party gifts etc…

These DIY fabric Bookmarks are just FUN and the fabric possibilities are endless to customize!

These DIY Fabric Bookmarks were such a fun project to play with.

I went through a few different ideas trying to find the best way to make them with the least amount of time. I feel like I came up with the real deal… with all the kinks worked out.

My wish is for you and your loved ones and lucky friend enjoy them. Let me know what you think in the comments!
